The Woodshop at HackPGH ...

is our largest Shop Area. A spacious 28’x34’ containing all of our woodworking machines, hand tools, hardware, and temporary project storage. There is also a 16’x18’ open workspace with one extra-large assembly table and a slightly larger hardwood workbench with bench dogs and vise.

The G1026 3 HP Shaper comes with 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ spindles sizes to work efficiently in combination with different sized cutters and spacers. The G0462 16″ x 46″ Wood Lathe with DRO can swing 16″ over the bed, comes with a 2 HP motor and sports a digital readout for spindle RPM.

Changing speeds is easy with the shift-on-the-fly speed control lever and there are no belts to mess with. The speed can be changed between 600 and 2400 RPM.

There are two large work tables in this area: 

  • 108”x27” workbench – Our woodworkers custom-built this workbench and topped it with Douglas Fir boards. It has two cabinetmaker vises and bench dog holes to aid in work holding. The workbench has a gap in the middle to attach clamps or lay hand planes. This is our primary work table and is meant for hand-tool wood working and sanding. 
  • 96”x28’ assembly table – This table is used for glue-ups, painting, and staining. It has a large roll of carpenter’s paper attached to one end. 

In addition to the work tables, we have other work surfaces available around the shop:

  • Our handmade work cabinets line the woodshop wall with an inset for the Miter Saw. The drawers and cabinets store our powered hand tools, sandpaper, and accessories for large equipment. To the right and left of the miter saw are work surfaces topped with black non-slip foam liners. Each one is 76” wide and 27” deep.
  • Our Yukon tool chest contains most of the shop’s small hardware and hand tools like planes, wrenches, chisels, and screwdrivers. The chest is topped with a solid wood work surface that is 49” wide and 18” deep.

Main Dust Collector

Our main dust DC system (the “Octocollector”) is powered by an Oneida 5HP Dust Gorilla Pro SMART Boost Dust Collector with a 55-gallon barrel collection and freestanding frame. It has overhead ducting and drops to eight of our equipment dust ports. The dust collection barrel has a red-light alarm system to tell us when it is full. Emptying the barrel shuts off the light and alarm. 

Small Dust Collector

Our secondary DC is a Rockler 1.5 HP Dust Rite Dust Collector with canister filter mounted to the wall in the back of the woodshop.  It is currently connected to the belt combo sander and the router cabinet. 

Mobile Festool Dust Extractor and Pre-Separator

This Dust Extractor and Pre-Separator duo-on-wheels is great for picking up work waste that varies in size. The top part separates and collects larger chips, and the extractor below collects the fine dust.

16-Gallon 5HP Ridgid Shop Vac

Our Shop Vac takes type “A” bags, and we keep filters with 1-5 layers. If a benchtop piece of equipment is not hooked up to a dust collector, we most likely have an adaptor to directly connect it to the Shop Vac! 

Wen 3417 Air Filtration Systems

HackPGH has two 3-speed Wen Air Filtration Machines on our industrial side. Each has a remote that can be used from 25 ft away. When using any of the standalone machines or a power tool that kicks up a lot of dust, turn on the air filters using the yellow timer button! 

60-Gallon Craftsman Air Compressor

This professional air compressor has a 3.1 HP induction motor and runs on 230v. Its max psi is 150, and recharges pressure rapidly so our makers can blast, grind, drive, wrench, and everything in between!
